The Usumgallu Serpents
Guards of sacred places
The Sumerian word Usumgallu literally means “strong demon”. several different demons were designated with the term “Usumgallu.” These demons are frequently depicted in the form of a serpent, but sometimes also as a dragon or as hybrid beings . 
The entire underground city, appropriately shaped like a lizard, reached from Elysian Park
(the lizard’s head) to today’s Central Library (the tip of the tail) 
Shufelt died in 1957.
