The Usumgallu Serpents

Guards of sacred places
​The Sumerian word Usumgallu literally means “strong demon”.  several different demons
​were designated with the term “Usumgallu.” These demons are frequently depicted in the form of
a serpent, but sometimes also as a dragon or as hybrid beings .

The entire underground city, appropriately shaped like a lizard, reached from Elysian Park
​ (the lizard’s head) to today’s Central Library (the tip of the tail)

​Shufelt died in 1957.
